Civil Engineering Construction

Roads, civil & mechanical. Roads and civil engineering construction on land and at the waterside, and mechanical construction and fabrication in Winsko's own covered workshop.

The service

Foundations, concrete and civil works, on land and at the waterside.

Alongside the oil and gas work, Winsko builds the civil works around it: piled and concrete foundations for platforms and equipment, reinforced concrete tanks, bund walls, equipment bases and boreholes, at flow stations, gas plants, well sites and loading areas.

Recent civil jobs include a reinforced concrete tank at San Bath to support barging operations and a borehole at a flow station in 2024, and a bund wall with its appurtenances for a diesel tank at Ajoki in 2023. Earlier work includes the civil works for a gas-lift bulk line at the Cawthorne Channel gas plant and piling foundations at the Diebu Creek flow station.

The excavators, payloaders and concrete mixers are Winsko's own, so a civil job is planned around plant that is already on the yard. Road building has its own page under Road Construction.

Scope of work · 06 work packages

What the work covers.

  • 01

    Foundations and piling

Piled and concrete foundations for platforms, tanks, pipe supports and equipment.

  • 02

    Reinforced concrete tanks

Tanks and pits cast in place, from reinforcement to watertight finish.

  • 03

    Bund walls and containment

Bunds around fuel and diesel tanks, with their drains and appurtenances.

  • 04

    Equipment bases

Plinths and slabs for skids, pumps, generators and pipe supports.

  • 05

    Boreholes

Borehole drilling at flow stations and work sites.

  • 06

    Site preparation

Clearing, grading, filling and site drainage for locations and yards.

Method · 05 stages

How a concrete structure is built.

Tanks, bunds and bases follow the same sequence, with the checks that close each stage.

  1. 01

    Survey and setting out

The site is surveyed, existing pipes and cables are located, and the structure is set out to the drawings.

    • Setting-out checked against drawings
    • Buried services located
    • Permit to work in place
  2. 02

    Excavation and foundation

The ground is excavated to firm material, piled where the soil is weak, and blinded ready for the reinforcement.

    • Formation inspected
    • Pile positions and depths recorded
    • Blinding levels checked
Bulldozers, a wheel loader and a swamp buggy on the yard by the water
    Earthmoving plantPhotograph
  3. 03

    Reinforcement and formwork

Steel is fixed to the bending schedule and the formwork is set true, with water bars where a tank or bund has to hold liquid.

    • Bar sizes, spacing and cover checked
    • Formwork line and level checked
    • Water bars and embedments in place
  4. 04

    Concrete and curing

Concrete is placed and vibrated in one continuous pour where possible, then cured so it reaches its strength.

    • Slump checked at delivery
    • Cubes taken from every pour
    • Curing kept up for the specified days
  5. 05

    Test and hand over

Tanks and bunds are filled and watched for leaks, and the structure is handed over with its records.

    • Water-tightness test passed
    • Cube results reviewed
    • As-built drawings issued

Inspection and testing

Strength and water-tightness, proven before hand-over.

A tank or a bund has one job: to hold. The checks follow the concrete from the batch to the water test.

Health, safety and environment

Safe excavations, safe pours.

Civil works on a live oil and gas site share the ground with pipes, cables and process plant. The controls protect the crew and the facility.

  • 01

    Buried services

Drawings checked, services located and hand-dug near live lines, under a permit to work.

  • 02

    Excavations

Battered or supported sides, barriers at the edge and no entry without a permit.
