Road Construction

Roads, civil & mechanical. Roads and civil engineering construction on land and at the waterside, and mechanical construction and fabrication in Winsko's own covered workshop.

The service

Roads built from the drain up.

Winsko builds and repairs roads: access roads to drilling locations for operators, and public roads for government. The work runs from drainage and earthworks through sand filling, stone base and compaction to asphalt, with plant from Winsko's own fleet.

For the Niger Delta Development Commission, Winsko carried out emergency repairs of failed and unmotorable road sections in Port Harcourt, Ughelli and Owerri in 2019. In 2021 it built the access road to the Owu-1 drilling location for Seplat Petroleum Development.

The photographs on this page are from Winsko's road works, stage by stage: drain formwork and concrete, grading, sand and stone base, compaction and asphalt.

Clearing, excavation, grading and filling to the design levels.

  • 05

    Pavement layers

Sharp sand filling and stone base, each layer compacted before the next.

  • 06

    Asphalt surfacing

Asphalt laid by paver, rolled and finished to level.

Method · 06 stages

How a road section is built.

The sequence follows Winsko's own road photographs, with the checks that close each stage.

  1. 01

    Survey and setting out

The route or failed section is surveyed, levels are taken, and the alignment, drains and traffic arrangements are set out before plant moves in.

    • Levels and alignment recorded
    • Existing services located
    • Traffic management in place
  2. 02

    Drainage

Drains are excavated, formwork is set and concrete is placed, open or closed, so the new road can shed water instead of failing again.

    • Formwork lines and levels checked
    • Concrete cubes taken
    • Falls confirmed before backfill
Timber formwork set in a trench beside a laterite road for a concrete drain

  3. 03

    Excavation and grading

Failed material is dug out to firm ground and the formation is graded to the design levels.

    • Soft spots removed
    • Formation levels checked
    • Spoil carted away
Motor grader shaping a red laterite road formation, an excavator behind
    Grading the formationPhotograph
  4. 04

    Sand filling

Sharp sand is spread in layers over the formation, watered and rolled to build the road up to level.

    • Layer thickness checked
    • Compaction tested per layer
    • Camber and levels checked
Wide road corridor filled with sharp sand, a site engineer looking along it

  5. 05

    Stone base and compaction

The stone base is laid over the sand and compacted with the roller until it is firm and true, ready for asphalt.

    • Base thickness checked
    • Density tested
    • Surface tolerance checked

    Asphalt

The wearing course is laid by paver, rolled and finished to level, and the road is reopened to traffic.

    • Laying temperature checked
    • Thickness and levels checked
    • Markings and signs reinstated

Inspection and testing

Every layer tested before the next goes on.

Roads fail from the bottom up, so the checks start at the formation and follow every layer to the surface.
